Do you want to have kids?

Last week Alex - my English teacher asked us a philosophical question: Do you want to have kids? Why or why not?

I didn’t answer at the time, but I shared a funny video of a couple announcing they were having “one more baby” to their children—and their reactions were priceless.

Eventually, I decided to write something about it:

''I think his question is too broad. Nowadays people can choose to have children biologically, through adoption or surrogacy. Some prefer having fur babies instead of human kids. Some go out on a limb and choose not to have any children.

Recently I read a news article about the first ever baby born through a womb transplant in the UK. It was fascinating. I didn't know 1 in 7000 women are born without a functioning womb. Based on what I read in the news, a few of them tried to push the limits of medical science by opting for a womb transplant in hopes of carrying a child.  In order to keep the womb transplant sustainable, women need to take daily immunosuppressants drugs which increase the risks of developing some cancers, especially if they take it for a long time.

When I think about it, that begs the question to what extent women want to have biological children? While over 147 million orphans live worldwide, are they doing it for God’s sake, for science’s sake… or just for the sake of saying, 'Look, I made this from scratch'?''
