55 body parts idioms

 I completed another idiom challenge last year, writing 55 examples using 55 body parts idioms. You can download the file from Alex's website and watch his videos on YouTube (part 1, part 2). 

Here are my examples, I hope you enjoy reading them. Feel free to share your feedback. 

Have a big head

Marjan: Why does Jacob make me have a guilt trip? 

Sophie: Don't take it personally. He just has a big head and wants everyone to obey him. 

Keep your head above water

When Jacob was axed from his job, it was difficult for him to keep his head above water. 

Bang your head against a brick wall

Everyone told Lucy that waiting for her fella to change his behaviour is like banging her head against a brick wall and it would be better if she breaks up with him. 

Off the top of your head

Benjamin: How much did you pay for those plates? They're a dime a dozen. 

Jessica: Off the top of my head, I paid 50 bucks for them. Cheap as chips! 


Lucy: What is the longest English word? 

Jasmine: Off the top of my head, it's pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.

Get something into your head 

Jessica’s fella finally got it into his head that he should not take her for granted. 

Put your heads together 

A hacker hacked Jacob’s website and he called Benjamin to put their heads together and find a solution. 

Lose your head 

They lost their head when they heard the murderer of their child got away.  

Head over heels 

Sophie was head over heels for her crush, but he was out of her league. 

Head in the clouds

Joseph had his head in the clouds when the new girl entered the class. 

Have a level head 

Jasmine was impressed by Benjamin as he has a level head and can think and act wisely even when he’s burnt out. 

Cost an arm and a leg 

Maria had to put her Siberian Husky for adoption as taking him to Australia would cost an arm and a leg. 

Twist someone’s arm 

She was scared of going through wisdom tooth extraction, but her dentist twisted her arm. 

Give your right arm 

She would give her right arm to marry the apple of her eye, fighting tooth and nail to overcome any challenges she faced. 

Long arm of the law 

She was left black and blue in the street and couldn’t report it to the police as the long arm of the law was molesting the victims instead of the perpetrators.  

At arm’s length

She kept the snakelets at her arm’s length. 

Up in arms

People were up in arms after floods destroyed their houses and the government didn’t send them any help. 

To have someone in the palm of your hand 

Michael Jackson had his fans in the palm of his hand during his concerts. 

To have a hand in 

Isabella has a hand in writing novels. 

Break a leg 

Lucy was going to perform in a theatre and her mom told her: “me duck, break a leg”.  

On your last legs 

She was on her last legs working everyday without taking off. She passed out just 10 minutes before leaving the office. When she came around, she found herself lying down in a hospital bed.   

Get a leg up

Keith's friendship with Japan's emperor gave him a leg up to get his story published in BBC.

Leg it 

Jasmine slept in and as a result, she had to leg it to the train station in order to catch the train on time. 

Pull someone’s leg 

Abraham was cracking jokes all night. Maria was in stitches and had to tell him to stop pulling her leg. 

Stand on your own two feet 

It was difficult for Michael to stand on his own two feet after losing his father in an accident. 

Not have a leg to stand on 

Mia didn’t have a leg to stand on for being late at work, therefore she pulled a sicky. 

To get legless 

After Jack’s girlfriend dumped him, he went to a pub and drank like a fish. He got legless and passed out in the street. 

To have legs 

Jacob thought his ideas for improving his business had legs. As a result, he put lots of effort into implementing his ideas. Unfortunately, he faced lots of headwinds and eventually his business went belly up.  

All mouth and no trousers 

Jacob tried to convince the board that Jack is a great choice for leading the project, but Jessica reminded everyone that he’s all mouth and no trousers. 

Bite your tongue

She was up in arms when her colleague started shouting at her. She wanted to raise her voice, but she had to bite her tongue and remain professional. 

Give someone a taste of their own medicine 

Lucy was annoyed anytime Jessica was bothering her during her lunch break. One day Lucy decided to give Jessica a taste of her own medicine and rushed her to finish her lunch quickly and come back to work. 

Speak with a forked tongue

Jessica saw an advertisement of a cheap desktop on the internet, when she contacted the seller, she felt the seller spoke with a forked tongue and she decided to err on the side of caution, not buying the desktop. 

Mouth-watering 

When they put the fruits on the table, she was only looking for the mouth-watering mulberries. 

Put your foot in your mouth 

She put her foot in her mouth when she told her boss that she has a big head. 

Shoot your mouth off 

Jack shot his mouth off when he said the university chancellor was only twiddling his thumbs. Now he’s in the doghouse. 

Have a sweet tooth 

We all know that Alex has a sweet tooth and every time Hugo splashes out on buying mouth-watering desserts and ice creams for him. 

Tooth and nail 

Sima fought tooth and nail for freedom and human rights in her country. 

Eagle eyes 

Jasmine boasted about her attention to details skill and said: I have a pair of eagle eyes! 

In the blink of an eye 

The eagle took the rabbit in the blink of an eye and flew away. 

Eyes are bigger than one’s stomach 

When Gabi told Lucy that she loaded so much food on her plate, Lucy told her that's like the pot calling the kettle black. Your eyes were bigger than your stomach, too. 

See eye to eye 

Joseph didn’t see eye to eye with his manager and he left the company. 

Turn a blind eye 

Sophie added too much salt in the food and she wished her fella would turn a blind eye and didn't mention it to her. 

Have eyes in the back of one’s head

George: I’m watching your every move, be careful! 

Jack: Gotcha! Big brother has eyes in the back of his head! 

Keep an eye on

Me: Hey Totoro, can you keep an eye on boiling eggs? I’m trying to jot down some examples for body parts idioms. 

Totoro: A watched pot never boils, ha! Relax, I got your back! I’ll stand in the kitchen and stare at your boiling eggs! 

Feast your eyes on 

Ondina: I don’t know what to eat!

Me: Feast your eyes on Alex’s new foodie IG account, it’s inspiring! 

 The apple of one’s eye

He’s a strong man! He will continue to live his life to the fullest even after the passing of the apple of his eye. 

See the world through rose-tinted glasses 

Despite all difficulties that Jasmine has gone through in her life, she still sees the world through rose-tinted glasses as she strongly believes every cloud has a silver lining. 

Caught red-handed 

The old man was caught red-handed during shoplifting. 

Get your hands dirty 

The river was full of rubbish. She decided to get her hands dirty and clean the river. 

Give someone a hand 

The restaurant was in full swing and Jack needed help to take out the trash. But as everyone was busy, nobody gave him a hand. 

Have your hands full 

Amanda asked Lucy if she can give him a hand to carry the egg baskets, but she said she has her hands full with carrying vegetables & fruits. 

To wash one's hands of something

He didn’t tell his sister that he left university as he was afraid if his sister washes her hands of him. 

To be in good hands 

She finally found a trustworthy foster dad to take care of her puppy while she was away. She told her puppy that she will be in good hands and behave herself until they meet again. 

To be hands-on 

Her hands-on Oscar winning movies enable her to recommend the best movies to her friends.
